  • How does owning a phone number work?

When you buy a phone for the first time, you are assigned a phone number to go with it. Once you’ve purchased that number, it’s yours to keep. You can switch providers at any point and take that phone number with you. So when you buy a phone number from us, it works exactly the same way. It’s yours to keep and use how you want, for whichever device you want. You can even replace your current number on your phone with the one you’ve just purchased.

  • Do I need an active phone service to buy a number today?

    Yes, however....

    • Most cell phone providers will issue you a SIM with a temporary phone number,
    • Most landline providers will issue a temporary phone number.
    • Once you have that, you can port your new phone number to replace the temporary number,
    • Most VOIP phone providers will port your new number to them to activate the service,
    • You should verify this with your phone carrier of choice.
    • We offer 30 days to port your new number to your provider. If you require longer you can keep it reserved by adding our monthly parking plan and keep it parked until you are readty to port.
  • Okay, I want to purchase a number from you. How do I port it?

When you purchase a number, we will send you an email with the Port Out Certificate, which will have the current account information on it, and explaining what you will need to do. Porting a number to a wireless carrier is the simplest process of all. Porting to a landline or VOIP provider may, but not always, require a simple form from your telephone provider that needs to be filled out. We even fill out the form for you!

There is no service plan included, nor will you receive a SIM card. You can port the number to your provider, landline carrier, cell company, voip provider, etc. There is NO porting fee charged by us!

  • Porting? What does that mean?

Number porting is the term for taking a phone number and moving it from one carrier to another.

  • Do I get a SIM card or a plan?

No, there is no SIM card or plan. You are purchasing a new phone number to replace your current phone number.

Once you purchase your new phone number fromus,  we send a Port Out Certificate to you via email. Once you have that, you will call your current phone provider and let them know you have a number you want to port to them.

You will provide them the details on the certificate and they will start the porting process. When the port is completed, your new number will replace your current number. The plan/contract you have with your provider stays the same.

As long as you keep your service active with your provider you will always have the number you purchased from us. In the future if you switch providers, you can port the number to a new provider, landline carrier, cell company, voip provider, etc.

  • Can I port to any phone?

Can I port to any phone?

Cellular phones and VoIP (as well as Google Voice) can be used with any number. However, landlines must be associated with an area code for the region it is in. So while you can use a Toronto 416 area code for a cellphone or VOIP carrier in Vancouver (as an example), you would need a local area code such as 604 for a landline.

Furthermore, not every phone number in your area code will work at every address in your area code. This is true of all numbers in the country. If you moved outside of your “rate center” (telecom jargon), even your current landline number would not work at your new address. It all has to do with the legacy telecom switch network. VOIP and wireless carriers are not bound by these restrictions. They use the internet and cell towers, respectively, as a transport mechanism, independent of the telecom switch network.

Please contact your landline carrier and ask them if the number you are interested in will work at the physical address you want your phone number to work at before ordering or buying your new phone number just to be sure.

  • How long will porting take?

Porting a number can take as little as two to three days, but it often takes a few weeks. The porting time to transfer your new number from Number Shack to your phone provider depends on many factors, including the carriers involved.

We use several different carriers to park our numbers until they are being ported to your carrier. Even when everything is submitted correctly, porting a phone number can be slow and manual. This is because most are manually entered and each carrier has its own proprietary system and requires its own unique set of information. We always recommend, when possible, for you to request the port via your carrier's online system. If that is not an option, we recommend calling your carrier to have their customer service start the port. We highly recommend not going to a retail store for your carrier. Most retail stores are designed to sell phone and plans. We notice the highest amount of errors and delays are caused by the port request being started at a retail store.

Most carriers have different types of verification, and follow-up communications aren’t standardized, clear or helpful. We have designed a Port Out Certificate (POC) which contains all of the information needed to submit a successful port request.

Before you sign a contract or take a deal, try and choose a leading communications provider that has a proven track record of regulatory compliance, connectivity and deliverability. Larger carriers have specialized ¨port fallout¨ departments who will assist with any errors and whose only job is porting. Rogers, Fido, Chatr, Telus, and Freedom Mobile have such departments to assist. Other carriers may also have porting specialists, however, we were unable to find or get that information from others when we contacted them.

There can be porting delays beyond our control, so please do not order promotional material or advertise your new number until the port has completed and you have ownership of the phone number.

Once we receive the port request from, we will approve the request and send you an email and text message with the FOC date. The FOC date is negotiated between your carrier and our carrier. We have no control or input into the FOC date.

Do not cancel or make any changes to the account you are porting your new number to until after the number has ported successfully. Premature changes or cancellation of your current account may cause the porting process to abort.

  • Can I port my new number to Google Voice or Google Fi?

Yes. But Google requires you to first port the number to a wireless carrier and then to Google’s services. They will not recognize any number — including your existing home or business number – unless it is first ported to a wireless carrier. So you will first need to port your new number to a prepaid wireless account.

  • Can I order a toll-free number?

Vanity toll-free numbers are easy to remember and generate brand awareness. Vanity phone numbers typically spell out a word or a phrase. Famous examples include 1-800-FLOWERS and 1-800-CONTACTS.

Instead of requiring customers to look up or memorize a seemingly random set of numbers, they can recall the number easily and use the corresponding letters on a phone’s alphanumeric buttons to dial quickly. Vanity numbers have several key benefits over non-vanity numbers and can, in many cases, be a smart, long-term investment for your business and are not expensive.

With a toll-free vanity number, expanding your presence nationally is less cumbersome. You can quickly get customers familiar with your brand and cast a wider net than you would with a non-memorable, local number. Visit toll-free.numbershack.com or simply contact us as we have access to thousands of toll-free vanity numbers, and we will find one to match your business or service.

Toll-free numbers can be set up to call forward to your business or cell phone for as low as $0.85 cents per month plus usage with our VOIP provider, contact us and we will have everything set up for you and will include $10 worth of free calls!
